Drunkard's mothers day....

I managed some sewing (and photos for Marg!) today. Sorry I don't have any from the class, my phone camera is permanently foggy and not worth using these days....

Sue had us working on Drunkard's path blocks. I've chosen the Tumbleweed layout, happy so far but not sure I'll make the 16 I had planned at first (or 192 individual blocks...), 4 is looking like a more realistic option!
However while I was happily cutting up fabric last night I discovered this doozey from some DS fabric I bought at Spotlight the other day. So not cool to discover the 50cm piece I had purchased was actually sewn up the middle like this! Wouldn't mind if that was how it had been labelled, but this was off the bolt!

And finally, all the sewing brought on the munchies. This brownie is my Mother's Day present to myself, it was deliciously fudgy while still warm and perfect with my afternoon cup of tea!

Wishing you all a happy Mother's day, whether your children are of the fur, niece/nephew, or son/ daughter variety! C

Disproportionate quilting

I guess improv quilting is dis-proportioned.  And I have to say that when I started my improv background for my medallion quilt for this year's Sue Ross Challenge Quilt (SRCQ) I went all out for the improv, crazy, helter-skelter look.

Couldn't do it.  Well I could, but I didn't like it with the medallion I had pieced.  It was too crazy, too improv and all in all a bit too scary for my naturally symmetrical quilting self.  It serves me right for laughing at Sue's need to use a ruler.

So what to do?  I decided I would go for a pieced improv look.  Not controlled improv like Kim, but pieces with the improv in some of them.  This way I could use up some of my crazy attempts but get nice evenly sized blocks too.  I am dis-proportionately pleased with the result which is in the photo below.  Only five of the four inch blocks are improv, the rest a mix of different light fabrics, including the bucking broncos which are a new favourite.  (I may have to invest in some more of that fabric.)
In other sewing news, I have finished the 21st quilt I brought to class last month and also the improv meets Gwen Marston baby quilt I had just about done in class.  The first will be off to the quilter, while I will do the second myself when the Big Bernina comes back from being mended. I am  powering along with the other 21st quilt which is much simpler, but still a bit of work.  Here's a sample block.  4 made, 21 to go!  This one sure uses up the starch.

  Happy stitching.

A giggle via facebook

I'm sure this has done the rounds of Instagram....but I totally want to do this!

Thanks again for a lovely day on the weekend, it was great to see everyone so productive and enthusiastic...I hope it continued into Sunday for you. I may have served rather caramelised sausages to my family as I kept on pushing the sewing boundaries into dinner time.

Kaffe's shirt quilt

So a day home with a little boy recovering from a vomiting bug at least has a productive outcome...another 2 shirts cut and sewn up. I'm totally embracing the ethos of mismatched stripes giving the quilt movement! Well-worn shirts seem to be rather tricky to keep straight!

In a pickle

36 blocks of Pickle-Dish Variation (Red Pepper Quilts pattern) - 30 of them pieced incorrectly.  I was going great-guns, too..  E

All done!

Photo quality is terrible but just wanted to show you that binding is finished and last year's quilt is all done! Big thanks to you all for your encouragement and to Denny for the reminder to attach the binding by machine, done is better than perfect! For now it graces our couch (or migrates to the floor....) hopefully the humidity will settle soon and it can provide some snuggliness.

Now onto this year's quilt...
